My best synonym for the word relinquish is surrender. The opposite is control.

I think one of the most sources of human suffering is trying to control outcome of situations in our minds. We imagine something, its ending and how the outcome will make our lives miserable. Yet, most of the things we worry about never happen in real life.

The other day my twin sister helped me put this issue; of always trying to control our outcomes; into perspective. And everything came down to; always having a complete and intentional trust in God or the Universe or your higher power. Where by you, wholly trust God that everything will be fine, despite any results.

I am sure you are wondering, isn’t that still controlling things by sticking to a positive outcome? No, it is not. It is a complete submission to whatever the outcome will be, both positive and negative and that we will indeed cross the bridge when we get there. Whether you are in a “have done my best,” or “have no single clue what to do” kind of situation.

The above comes with having FAITH, HOPE and BELIEVE that everything will be well. By surrender, I am talking of the kind of trust you have on your seat while in a meeting that it will not fall down or your hand will not be functioning in the evening while having your dinner, or your heart will not stop beating ahead of tomorrow’s job interview or your next vacation plan. This gives birth to less stress and PEACE of mind.

Now, the opposite is having ANXIETY, FEAR and WORRY because the mind is busy trying to imagine a negative outcome and the misery thereof. This gives birth to more pain and emotional SUFFERING. The sad truth is that most of us are here, that sometimes we get so surprised when things go well.

We live in a society that has set unrealistic standards of perfection, which then make us create an imagined version of who or what we should be. This then forces us to set unrealistic standards of that imagined self, which is usually so fragile and whose ego is always walking on eggshells, ready to explode at the tiniest life inconveniences.

Living a life of surrender is very hard, but worth practicing. Because in the end what we all aspire is to live a happy life, which can only be found from having peace of mind that comes from within. Moreover, letting go the future, also allows us to be courageous and vulnerable, to try new things without procrastinating or worrying how wrong things will go.

So, just the way you cannot eat lunch for tomorrow, live in the present moment because there is none that repeats itself. By any chance, anything you did and achieved was in the present moment and not through worry.
