I think pain, physical or emotional, is one of the deepest and perhaps the only thing that bring human beings closer to themselves. To a deeper understanding of who they are and a moment of defining their real meaning of life and existence. It is at this time a majority of us realize how important for instance family, friends and loved ones are and that only the simple things in life really matter.
I have mentioned before how I once went 24 hours straight without sleeping, holding my pillow tight closer to my chest. I was in so much emotional pain and this is no unique case. We all have these super low moments, when we face very uncertain adversities that throws us to the deep end. This is because life has its way of reminding us how less we know about anything.
It was during this moment that I landed on ‘knowing oneself’ and it has taken time to grasp the statement. I guess it is how the words have been thrown around by every ‘motivational’ personality, if not defined by a ‘million’ sites online. However, through my own experience grasping what exactly it is to know one self does not happen overnight, but requires stillness and a lot of introspection.
From my gender communications class back in the university, we were taught that when men introduce themselves, they start with their title and if they have several of them, they would mention them to the latter. Women on the other hand, start with family; like being a mom, a wife etc. Nothing wrong with this. However, it is a slight depiction how our external identities have taken center stage in defining who we are.
The reason for the above is because of the turmoil and agony that hits us when some of the above identities or affiliations are taken away from us or we are engulfed with unceraitinity. When things do not go our way. This is when it gets clear that indeed most, if not all of our existence, is purely in comparison to someone or something outside ourselves. And how this desire to be something or someone continue to create emptiness within us.
Please do not get me wrong. I am not here preaching mediocrity; we should all work towards our goals. I mean, everything we see all around was once in a human mind but it came to be through action and effort. Failure included.
Never forget that when all that is within you closes shop and cease to function, so does everything else and all there is to life, loses meaning. So, find, discover and passionately love all your being/ human existence and the wonderful life within you. Because that is exactly and simply who you are.
